A Day To Never Forget

Remembering Srebrenica: UN Establishes Annual Day of Remembrance for 1995 Genocide

A Day to Never Forget

Twenty-eight years after the Srebrenica genocide, the UN General Assembly has voted to establish an annual day of remembrance.

On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces under the command of Ratko Mladić massacred over 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica. The genocide was the culmination of a campaign of ethnic cleansing and atrocities committed by Serb forces against the Bosniak population during the Bosnian War.

The UN's resolution recognizes the Srebrenica genocide as "the most horrific crime committed in Europe since World War II" and calls for the promotion of education and awareness-raising about the genocide to prevent future atrocities.

A Step Towards Reconciliation

The establishment of an annual day of remembrance for the Srebrenica genocide is a significant step towards reconciliation and healing in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a reminder that the horrors of the past must never be forgotten and that the victims and survivors of genocide deserve justice and dignity.

The day of remembrance will be held on July 11, the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. It will be a day for people around the world to remember the victims, honor their memory, and recommit themselves to preventing future atrocities.
