Monkeypox Outbreak Hits Iowa Prison

What You Need to Know

The Iowa Department of Public Health has confirmed cases of monkeypox in inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary. This is the first confirmed outbreak of monkeypox in a prison in the United States.

The Iowa Department of Corrections is working with the Iowa Department of Public Health to investigate the outbreak and prevent further spread of the virus.

Symptoms of Monkeypox

The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to those of smallpox, but milder. They include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • A rash that starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body

How Monkeypox Spreads

Monkeypox is spread through close contact with an infected person or animal. The virus can be transmitted through:

  • Direct contact with the rash or bodily fluids of an infected person
  • Contact with contaminated objects, such as clothing, bedding, or towels
  • Inhalation of respiratory droplets from an infected person

Treatment for Monkeypox

There is no specific treatment for monkeypox. The symptoms usually go away on their own within 2 to 4 weeks.

Treatment may be given to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. This may include:

  • Pain relievers
  • Antiviral medications
  • Intravenous fluids

Prevention of Monkeypox

There is no vaccine to prevent monkeypox, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Do not share personal items, such as clothing, bedding, or towels, with someone who is sick.
  • If you have a rash, cover it up and avoid contact with other people.
  • See your doctor if you have a rash or other symptoms of monkeypox.
